In almost every room of my house there are items that I created, renewed or have fond memories of. Behind each is a story about how I came to have it and why it means something to me.
In the end it is all just stuff.
It may have some monetary value but nothing earth shattering. For me the real value is linked to the story behind it. It’s the story that elevates it and turns it into a treasure.
An example:
I have a box of old hand tools some of which I’ve mounted on old barnboard. I’ve seen similar tools at the Habitat for Humanity Restore selling for $10.00 a piece or less. Not a great demand for them as most have been replaced by modern more user friendly versions.

What makes these tools valuable to me is that they were once owned and used by my Great Grandfather and then my Grandfather. Knowing this elevates them.
I’ll admit that building something using these tools gives me a warm feeling. I’m the third generation to have held and used them. Very cool.
So whether I’m writing about a memento linked to something interesting I’ve done or a piece of furniture I rescued and restored – in the end I’m having a bit of fun. And hopefully I’m preserving a memory for future generations that would otherwise have been lost.
A final thing – although the stories I write about all have a basis in reality, everything is as viewed through the lens of me, my memories, my perspectives and perceptions. They may not be the same as how others remember it but as the writer I have artistic license and don’t really care that much.
Enjoy the read.
